Only Upgrade What’s Actually Limiting You
The 3D printing community has an upgrade obsession. Forums are full of mod lists that turn a $200 printer into a $400 frankenprinter that prints about the same as it did stock.
Here’s the truth: modern printers are good out of the box. The gains from upgrades are smaller than they were 5 years ago. Focus on the ones that solve real problems, skip the ones that solve hypothetical ones.
These upgrades are ranked by actual impact on print quality, reliability, and capability.
Tier 1: High Impact, Everyone Should Consider
PEI Spring Steel Build Plate — $15-25
The single most impactful upgrade if your printer doesn’t already have one.
A textured PEI plate fixes bed adhesion for virtually every material. Parts stick when the bed is hot and release when it cools — just flex the plate and the print pops off. No more scraping, no more glue stick, no more ruined prints from poor adhesion.
Get this if: Your printer shipped with a sticker/BuildTak surface, bare glass, or you’re using glue stick on every print.
Skip this if: Your printer already has a PEI plate (Bambu A1, P1S, most modern mid-range printers).
What to buy: Energetic or FYSETC spring steel PEI sheets in your printer’s bed size. Textured for general use, smooth for glossy bottom surfaces.
Hardened Steel Nozzle — $8-15
Stock brass nozzles wear out fast with abrasive filaments. Carbon fiber, glow-in-the-dark, wood-fill, and glass-fill all contain particles that erode brass within 10-20 print hours. A worn nozzle under-extrudes and kills print quality.
Hardened steel nozzles last 10-50x longer with abrasive materials. The tradeoff is slightly reduced thermal conductivity — you might need to print 5-10°C hotter.
Get this if: You print any abrasive filament. Or if you notice under-extrusion after weeks/months of printing (your brass nozzle may be worn).
Skip this if: You only print standard PLA and PETG. Brass handles these indefinitely.
What to buy: 0.4mm hardened steel nozzle for your hotend type (MK8, E3D V6, Bambu, etc.). Brands: Slice Engineering Vanadium, 3D BEST-Q, or your printer manufacturer’s version.
Filament Dryer — $40-60
Wet filament is the hidden cause of most persistent print quality issues. Stringing that won’t go away? Rough surface texture? Popping sounds during printing? Your filament absorbed moisture from the air.
A filament dryer sits under or next to your printer, keeping the active spool at 45-65°C while printing. It’s the fix for a problem you might not know you have.
Get this if: You print PETG, TPU, nylon, or any moisture-sensitive material. Or if you live in a humid climate. Or if filament sits unused for weeks between sessions.
Skip this if: You only print PLA in a dry climate and use filament within a few days of opening.

Tier 2: Meaningful Upgrades for Specific Needs
All-Metal Hotend — $25-60
Some budget printers ship with PTFE-lined hotends that limit maximum temperature to ~240°C. Above that, the PTFE tube degrades and releases toxic fumes. An all-metal hotend replaces the PTFE lining with a metal heatbreak, enabling temperatures up to 300°C+.
Get this if: You want to print PETG above 245°C, ABS, ASA, nylon, or polycarbonate. Or if you’re replacing a worn hotend anyway.
Skip this if: You only print PLA (190-220°C). Also skip if your printer already has an all-metal hotend (Bambu Lab, Creality K1C, Elegoo Neptune 4 Pro — all ship all-metal).
What to buy: Micro Swiss all-metal hotend for your printer model, or a bi-metal heatbreak (cheaper, same benefit).
Enclosure — $40-150 (DIY) or $100-300 (premade)
An enclosure creates a temperature-stable environment around your printer, which is essential for ABS, ASA, nylon, and PC. It also reduces drafts that cause warping with any material.
Get this if: You print ABS, ASA, nylon, or polycarbonate. Or if drafts in your room cause warping on large prints.
Skip this if: You only print PLA and PETG (no enclosure needed). Also skip if your printer is already enclosed (Bambu P1S, Creality K1 series).
Options:
- IKEA Lack enclosure — Two IKEA Lack tables stacked, with acrylic panels. The community classic. ~$40-80 in materials.
- Premade fabric enclosures — Available for most popular printers. $60-150.
- Creality enclosure kits — Official options for Ender-3 and K-series. $80-150.
Warning: Enclosed printers with electronics inside the enclosure (especially stepper drivers) can overheat. Monitor temperatures and add ventilation for the electronics if needed.
Direct Drive Extruder Conversion — $40-80
If your printer has a Bowden extruder (motor on the frame, not the printhead), converting to direct drive dramatically improves flexible filament (TPU) performance and reduces retraction-related stringing.
Get this if: You have a Bowden printer (older Ender-3, CR-10) and want to print TPU or reduce stringing.
Skip this if: Your printer already has direct drive (Bambu Lab, Creality K1C, Neptune 4, modern Ender-3 V3 SE — all direct drive).
What to buy: Creality Sprite extruder kit (for Ender-3 series), or a generic direct drive conversion plate for your printer.
Tier 3: Nice to Have
Upgraded Bed Springs / Silicone Spacers — $5-10
Replace the stock springs under your heated bed with silicone spacers. They don’t compress over time, so your bed stays level longer between manual calibrations.
Get this if: You have a printer that requires manual bed leveling and the bed needs re-leveling frequently.
Skip this if: Your printer has auto bed leveling (most modern printers).
Capricorn PTFE Tube — $10-15
Higher-quality PTFE tube with tighter inner diameter tolerance. Reduces filament wobble in Bowden setups.
Get this if: You have a Bowden extruder and experience inconsistent extrusion.
Skip this if: You have a direct drive extruder (the PTFE tube is very short and stock is fine).
Raspberry Pi + OctoPrint/Klipper — $35-75
A Raspberry Pi running OctoPrint adds Wi-Fi control, webcam monitoring, and remote print management to any printer. Alternatively, flash Klipper firmware for advanced features like input shaping and pressure advance.
Get this if: Your printer lacks Wi-Fi and you want remote monitoring. Or you want Klipper’s advanced features on a printer that doesn’t run it stock.
Skip this if: Your printer already has Wi-Fi and cloud connectivity (Bambu Lab, Creality K1 series, Neptune 4).
Upgrades to Skip

Before buying any upgrade, ask:
- Am I solving a problem I actually have? — If not, skip it.
- Does this cost more than 30% of a modern printer? — If yes, consider buying a new printer instead.
- Will this make my next print better? — If you can’t point to a specific improvement, it’s a want, not a need.
The Bottom Line
PEI bed plate, hardened nozzle (if you print abrasives), and a filament dryer. Those three upgrades cover 90% of real-world needs. Everything else is situational.
Don’t upgrade your printer into a ship of Theseus. If you’re spending $200 on upgrades for a $200 printer, you should have bought a $400 printer.
