PETG Is the Workhorse Filament — But Quality Varies Wildly
PLA is for prototypes. ABS is for masochists. PETG is for everything in between — functional parts, outdoor items, anything that needs to actually work without the headaches of printing ABS.
But not all PETG is equal. Cheap PETG is stringy, inconsistent, and frustrating. Good PETG prints almost as easily as PLA while being dramatically stronger and more heat-resistant.
Here’s what separates good PETG from bad:
- Moisture sensitivity — PETG absorbs moisture faster than PLA. Poorly packaged PETG arrives wet and prints terribly.
- Stringing tendency — All PETG strings. Bad PETG strings a LOT.
- Dimensional accuracy — ±0.02mm tolerance matters. Inconsistent diameter = inconsistent extrusion.
- Clarity — PETG can be translucent or opaque depending on the formula. Some brands nail both, others are muddy.
- Layer adhesion — Good PETG creates parts that feel solid. Bad PETG delaminates under stress.
We focused on brands that minimize PETG’s downsides while maximizing its strengths.
1. OVERTURE PETG — Best Overall
OVERTURE does PETG better than anyone at this price point. It’s the brand that made budget PETG actually reliable. At $18-20/kg, it costs less than most premium PLA — and prints with minimal drama.
Why it wins:
- ±0.02mm tolerance — Consistent diameter means consistent extrusion
- Vacuum-sealed packaging — Arrives dry, which matters enormously with PETG
- Minimal stringing — For PETG, this is as good as it gets without dropping to PLA
- Good color range — Including solid, transparent, and matte options
- Multi-pack deals — 2-packs and bulk bundles bring per-kg cost under $17
- Build plate samples included — Each spool ships with a small PEI sheet sample
The catch: Color selection isn’t as massive as HATCHBOX or Polymaker. The transparent colors are good but not perfectly clear. Some batches are slightly more stringy than others — store sealed between uses.
Best for: Everyone. If you’re buying one PETG brand, make it OVERTURE.
Print settings: 230-245°C nozzle, 80°C bed, 40-60mm/s for best results (or 100-150mm/s on modern printers with tuned profiles).
2. Polymaker PolyMax PETG — Best for Strength
Polymaker’s PolyMax line is their toughened engineering filament. PolyMax PETG is significantly stronger than standard PETG — Polymaker claims 3x the impact resistance — while maintaining similar printability.
Why it stands out:
- Exceptional impact resistance — Parts flex and absorb stress instead of cracking
- Layer adhesion — Some of the best inter-layer bonding in any PETG we’ve tested
- ±0.02mm tolerance — Polymaker’s usual tight quality control
- Excellent documentation — Detailed datasheets with tested mechanical properties
- Prints like standard PETG — No special hardware or settings needed
The catch: $28-32/kg is nearly double the price of OVERTURE. If your parts don’t need the extra impact resistance, you’re paying for performance you won’t use. Color selection is also more limited (mostly solid colors).
Best for: Functional parts under mechanical stress — brackets, clips, tool holders, drone frames, anything that needs to survive impacts.
Print settings: 235-245°C nozzle, 80°C bed, same speeds as standard PETG.
3. HATCHBOX PETG — Best All-Rounder
HATCHBOX makes the most recommended PLA on the market, and their PETG is equally reliable. It’s the safe choice — not the cheapest, not the strongest, but consistently good in every category.
Why it delivers:
- Consistent batch quality — The same reliability HATCHBOX is known for in PLA
- 40+ colors — One of the widest PETG color selections available
- ±0.03mm tolerance — Slightly wider than OVERTURE but still excellent
- Clean spool winding — No tangling issues
- Forgiving temp range — 230-250°C works across most printers
The catch: More expensive than OVERTURE for similar performance. The ±0.03mm tolerance is good but not best-in-class. Stringing is average for PETG — manageable but not minimal.
Best for: HATCHBOX PLA users who want to try PETG with a brand they trust. The color matching between their PLA and PETG lines is excellent for multi-material projects.
Print settings: 230-250°C nozzle, 75-85°C bed.
4. SUNLU PETG — Best Budget Option
SUNLU’s PETG undercuts OVERTURE on price while delivering surprisingly solid results. It’s not perfect — stringing is a bit more noticeable and color consistency can vary — but at $16-19/kg, it’s the cheapest way to print PETG reliably.
Why it works:
- $16-19/kg — Cheapest reputable PETG on the market
- ±0.02mm tolerance — Same accuracy as brands costing 50% more
- Good spool winding — SUNLU’s automatic winding is consistent
- Wide availability — Almost always in stock on Amazon
- Bulk pricing — Multi-packs push cost to ~$14/kg
The catch: More stringing than OVERTURE or HATCHBOX. Some translucent colors are cloudy rather than clear. Occasional batch variation — most rolls are great, but you’ll get one that’s slightly off every 10-15 rolls.
Best for: High-volume printing where you burn through filament fast. Prototyping in PETG where finish quality isn’t critical.
Print settings: 230-240°C nozzle, 80°C bed. Slightly lower temps reduce stringing.
5. eSUN PETG — Best for Transparent Prints
eSUN’s PETG excels at what PETG does uniquely well — transparency. Their clear and translucent colors are some of the most optically clear available in FDM filament. If you’re printing light diffusers, display cases, or anything that benefits from transparency, eSUN is the pick.
Why it’s notable:
- Exceptional clarity — Their transparent PETG is genuinely clear, not just “sort of see-through”
- Solid mechanical properties — Strong layer adhesion and good impact resistance
- ±0.03mm tolerance — Reliable dimensional accuracy
- Good temperature range — 230-250°C with wide working window
- Reasonable pricing — $20-24/kg sits in the mid-range
The catch: Non-transparent colors are average — nothing wrong with them, but no advantage over cheaper options. Spool winding is functional but not as clean as OVERTURE or HATCHBOX. Stock can be spotty on Amazon for popular colors.
Best for: Translucent and transparent prints — lampshades, light guides, display enclosures, vases with LED backlighting.
Print settings: 235-245°C nozzle, 80°C bed. For maximum clarity, print slower (30-40mm/s) with 100% infill and no fan.
6. Bambu Lab PETG — Best for Bambu Printers
If you own a Bambu Lab printer, their RFID-chipped PETG auto-configures all print settings. Pop in the spool, and Bambu Studio sets the temperature, flow rate, retraction, and fan speed automatically. Zero tuning.
Why Bambu users should consider it:
- RFID auto-configuration — Temperature, retraction, and flow set automatically
- AMS-optimized — Smooth filament swaps with minimal purging
- Tested on Bambu hardware — Profiles are dialed in from the factory
- Consistent quality — Bambu’s supply chain QC is solid
- Same-brand convenience — One ecosystem, one support channel
The catch: $24-28/kg is expensive for PETG. The RFID feature only works with Bambu printers — on anything else, it’s overpriced generic PETG. Color selection is limited compared to established filament brands.
Best for: Bambu printer owners who want hassle-free PETG printing, especially with AMS multi-material setups.

Storing PETG
PETG absorbs moisture faster than PLA. Wet PETG sounds crackly during printing and produces rough, stringy results.
Storage rules:
- Reseal in vacuum bags with desiccant after every use
- A SUNLU S2 dry box keeps filament dry while printing ($40-50)
- If PETG has been sitting out more than a week in humid conditions, dry it: 65°C for 4-6 hours
- Don’t rely on the original packaging long-term — it’s not airtight once opened
The Bottom Line
OVERTURE PETG is the default recommendation. Best balance of quality, printability, and price. It’s the HATCHBOX PLA equivalent for the PETG world.
