First-Layer Failures Are 90% of Print Failures
If your print fails, it almost always fails on the first layer. Get the first layer right, and the rest of the print usually finishes. Get it wrong, and you’re scraping plastic spaghetti off your bed at hour 8.
The good news: first-layer issues have four root causes and they’re all easy to fix.
Cause 1: Bed Temperature
Cold beds don’t hold filament. The number one fix:

If your bed is at room temperature when the print starts, that’s the issue. Modern slicers wait for the bed to heat before starting — but if your slicer profile is wrong or your printer is reporting bed temp incorrectly (bad thermistor), the print starts before the bed is hot.
Test: Touch the bed before the print starts (carefully — it might be hot). If it’s cool, your bed isn’t heating. Check thermistor connection or replace it.
Cause 2: Z-Offset Too High
The nozzle needs to be just barely above the bed during the first layer. If it’s too high, filament drops onto the bed instead of being squished against it. Drop = no adhesion.
How to tell:
- Lines look round (like spaghetti) instead of flat
- You can see daylight between adjacent lines
- Lines pull off the bed when you touch them
How to fix:
- Auto-leveling printers: Adjust Z-offset in the menu. Lower by 0.05mm at a time. Print a first-layer test square.
- Manual leveling printers: Use the paper test — slide standard printer paper between nozzle and bed. You want slight friction (paper drags but doesn’t tear).
The first layer should look like flattened play-doh — slightly squished, lines fully fused with neighbors. Not round, not bulging, not see-through.
Cause 3: Dirty Bed Surface
Skin oils from your hands kill bed adhesion. So does dust. So does residual glue stick from a previous print.
Fix:
- Wipe the entire bed with 91%+ isopropyl alcohol before every print
- Don’t touch the build surface with bare hands
- Hold the build plate by the edges, not the print area
If your bed is a glass surface, occasional washing with soap and water is fine (and removes oils more thoroughly than IPA). PEI sheets should only get IPA — water can damage the PEI coating over time.
Cause 4: First-Layer Speed Too Fast
Default first-layer speed in most slicers is 50% of normal print speed. For a 100mm/s normal print, that’s 50mm/s on the first layer. Too fast for reliable adhesion.
Drop first-layer speed to 20-30mm/s. This is the single most effective change for stubborn first-layer issues.
In Bambu Studio: Quality > First Layer Speed
In Cura: Speed > Initial Layer Speed
In OrcaSlicer: Quality > First Layer Speed
Slow first layers cost an extra 1-2 minutes per print and prevent 80% of adhesion failures.
Diagnostic Flowchart
If your first layer isn’t sticking, work through this in order:
- Is the bed at the right temperature? If no, fix that first.
- Did you clean the bed with IPA? If no, clean and re-try.
- Does the first layer look squished? If no, lower Z-offset 0.1mm and re-test.
- Is the first layer printing at <30mm/s? If no, slow it down.
- Is the build surface PEI / glass / textured? If textured, you should be fine. If glass, consider a glue stick.
If all five checks pass and the print still isn’t sticking — you’ve got a bigger issue. Most likely:
- Damaged build surface (replace the PEI sheet)
- Bent build plate (rare, check with a straightedge)
- Wrong slicer profile (try a stock profile from your printer manufacturer)
When to Use a Brim or Raft
For tall thin prints (towers, vases), even a perfect first layer can fail if the print tips over. Use:
- Brim — flat single-layer outline around the base of the print. Adds 30 seconds, prevents tipping. Use this for almost everything tall.
- Raft — full sacrificial layer underneath the print. Wastes filament but creates near-bulletproof adhesion. Use for warpy materials (ABS) or prints with small contact areas.
For most prints, a brim is fine. Save rafts for problem cases.
Adhesion Aids You Probably Don’t Need
Modern PEI build plates don’t need:
- Hairspray
- Glue stick (for PLA — required for ABS/Nylon)
- Painter’s tape
- Magigoo / proprietary adhesives
If someone’s recommending these for PLA on a modern printer, they’re solving a problem you don’t have. Save the money and just use the bare PEI surface.
