What Elephant’s Foot Looks Like

Elephant’s foot is a specific geometry defect: the bottom 1-3 layers of a print are wider than the rest of the print. The shape literally looks like an elephant’s foot — bulged bottom tapering to normal width above.

It’s most visible on:

  • Prints with vertical sides (cubes, cylinders, boxes)
  • Functional parts where the base needs to be precise
  • Prints stacked or assembled with other prints (bulged base prevents flat seating)

It’s hardest to spot on:

  • Organic shapes
  • Tapered or pyramidal designs
  • Decorative prints where dimensional precision doesn’t matter

Why It Happens

Two things cause elephant’s foot:

1. Hot Bed Holds Lower Layers Soft

The bed stays at 60-100°C throughout the print. The lowest 1-3 layers sit close enough to absorb that heat and stay near their glass transition temperature (the point where plastic gets soft).

Meanwhile, layers 5-10 above are cooling and adding weight. That weight compresses the still-warm bottom layers outward.

2. Z-Offset Too Low

If the nozzle is pressed too close to the bed during the first layer, it physically squishes the filament outward into a wider line.

Both causes lead to the same visible result.

Fix 1: Slicer Compensation (Easiest)

Modern slicers have a built-in fix called Elephant Foot Compensation (Bambu Studio, Cura) or Initial Layer Horizontal Expansion (Cura specifically, set to a negative value).

How It Works

The slicer shrinks the first 1-2 layers by a specified amount, compensating for the outward bulge. The first layer prints smaller than designed, so when it bulges, it ends up at the correct size.

Settings to Use

  • Bambu Studio: Quality > Elephant Foot Compensation > 0.1mm (start), 0.2mm (if more needed)
  • Cura: Walls > Initial Layer Horizontal Expansion > -0.1mm (start), -0.2mm (if more needed)
  • OrcaSlicer: Quality > Elephant Foot Compensation > 0.1mm
  • PrusaSlicer: Print Settings > Advanced > Elephant foot compensation > 0.1mm

This is the easiest fix and works for most prints.

Fix 2: Lower Bed Temperature

If compensation isn’t enough, drop the bed temperature to reduce thermal squish.

Below the minimum, you lose bed adhesion. Find the sweet spot where prints still stick but elephant’s foot fades.

Important Caveat

Some printers (Bambu, Creality K1C) only let you set a target bed temperature. The bed may overshoot or hold higher temps from waste heat.

Fix 3: Raise Z-Offset Slightly

If your first layer is too squished (lines flattened, no daylight between them, bulging where they meet), your Z-offset is too low.

Tune the Z-Offset

  1. Print a first-layer test square
  2. Inspect first layer:
    • Squished and bulging: Z too low → raise by 0.05mm
    • Round lines with gaps: Z too high → lower by 0.05mm
    • Flat with slight ridges between lines: correct Z
  3. Re-test after each adjustment

The first layer should look like flattened play-doh — slightly squished, fully fused, no obvious bulging.

Fix 4: Improve First-Layer Cooling

If the first layer cools too slowly, it stays soft and squishes outward.

Adjustments

  • Enable cooling fan from layer 2 (default in most slicers)
  • For very small prints, ramp the fan to 100% by layer 1 (advanced setting)
  • For small first layers (under 5cm² footprint), use minimum layer time to ensure each layer has time to cool before the next is laid down

When NOT to Do This

For ABS, you don’t want extra cooling — it causes warping. Live with mild elephant’s foot on ABS or use slicer compensation only.

Fix 5: Adjust Bed Adhesion Aids

If you’re using glue stick or hairspray and applying too much, the thicker layer creates a soft cushion under the first layer that exacerbates squish.

Application Tips

  • Glue stick: Thin even layer, not piled up
  • Hairspray: 1 light spray from 30cm away, not soaked
  • None needed for PEI: Modern PEI surfaces don’t need adhesion aids for PLA

Diagnostic: Is It Elephant’s Foot or Something Else?

Elephant’s Foot

  • Bulge is at the bottom 1-3 layers only
  • Above the bulge, the print is normal width
  • Bulge is uniform around the print

Brim Adhesion (Different)

  • “Bulge” is a brim that won’t peel off cleanly
  • Above the brim, print is normal
  • Fix: Remove brim more carefully, or use raft instead

First Layer Spread (Different)

  • Entire first layer is wider than designed
  • Above first layer, print is normal
  • Fix: Lower first-layer extrusion multiplier

Warping (Different)

When You Don’t Need to Fix It

For these prints, mild elephant’s foot is fine:

  • Display models (cosmetic, won’t be measured)
  • Decorative prints
  • Prints that will be sanded or finished
  • Single-piece functional parts where the base doesn’t mate with anything

For these prints, you must fix it:

  • Press-fit assemblies (the base won’t insert)
  • Threaded inserts at the base
  • Prints that stack or assemble with other prints
  • Mechanical parts with dimensional tolerances

The Combined Fix

For persistent elephant’s foot on functional parts, apply all four fixes together:

  1. Set slicer Elephant Foot Compensation to 0.15mm
  2. Lower bed temperature 5°C from default
  3. Verify Z-offset is correct (lines flat, no gaps, no bulges)
  4. Ensure cooling fan engages from layer 2

This combination solves 95% of elephant’s foot cases.
