What Z-Banding Looks Like

Z-banding shows up as horizontal stripes or bands on the vertical walls of a 3D print. The bands typically:

  • Repeat at consistent intervals (usually 1-4mm)
  • Run the full circumference of the print
  • Are most visible on smooth flat walls
  • Don’t appear on infill or hidden interior surfaces

Sometimes called “salmon skin” because the wave pattern looks like fish scales.

The hallmark of Z-banding (vs other surface defects) is regularity. If your bands are evenly spaced, it’s Z-banding. If they’re random, it’s likely under-extrusion or temperature inconsistency.

Diagnostic Step 1: Measure the Band Spacing

Use calipers (or a ruler) to measure the distance between bands.

  • 2mm spacing — exactly one rotation of an M8 lead screw. Confirms lead screw wobble.
  • 4mm spacing — half-rotation pattern of an M8 lead screw. Same cause.
  • 8mm spacing — could be M8 lead screw rotation or pulley alignment.
  • Random spacing — not Z-banding. Likely thermal or extrusion issue.

If your spacing matches your printer’s lead screw pitch, you’ve identified the cause.

Cause 1: Bent or Misaligned Lead Screw

Most common cause on bedslingers and Cartesian printers. The Z-axis lead screw isn’t perfectly vertical or has a slight bend.

Fix: The “Floating Coupler” Mod

The coupler between the stepper motor and lead screw needs to be slightly loose so it can absorb minor misalignment. Many printers ship with rigid couplers that transmit every wobble.

Solution:

  1. Loosen the screws on the Z-coupler
  2. Run the printer through a manual Z-axis movement (raise/lower)
  3. Tighten the screws while the lead screw is centered
  4. Print a test cube — banding should improve

For more severe cases, replace the rigid coupler with a flexible Oldham coupler ($5-10) or a similar floating design.

Fix: Replace the Lead Screw

If the lead screw is visibly bent (roll it on a flat surface and watch for wobble), replace it. Standard 8mm trapezoidal lead screws are $10-15 on Amazon.

Cause 2: Z-Axis Bearing Wear

Linear bearings on the Z-axis can develop play over time, causing the gantry to shift slightly between layers.

Diagnose

With the printer off, manually wiggle the Z-gantry side-to-side. Any noticeable play = worn bearings.

Fix

Replace the linear bearings (LM8UU on most printers) — about $1 each, takes 15-20 minutes. Or upgrade to linear rails ($30-60) for a permanent fix.

Cause 3: Temperature Fluctuations

Inconsistent nozzle temperature causes inconsistent extrusion, which can look like Z-banding.

Diagnose

Check your nozzle temperature graph during a print. If you see swings of more than 2-3°C, the heater PID is poorly tuned.

Fix: Run PID Auto-Tune

Most printers have a PID tuning command. Run it for both the hotend and bed:

  • Marlin: M303 E0 S210 C8 (PID-tune hotend at 210°C, 8 cycles)
  • Klipper: PID_CALIBRATE HEATER=extruder TARGET=210

The tuning takes 5-10 minutes and produces new heater values. Save them to your printer firmware.

Cause 4: Inconsistent Filament Diameter

Cheap filament with diameter inconsistencies (±0.1mm or worse) extrudes inconsistent amounts per layer, which can present as Z-banding-adjacent issues.

Diagnose

Measure the filament with calipers in 5-10 spots along a meter of filament. Variance over ±0.05mm = problem.

Fix

Switch to a reputable brand (Hatchbox, Polymaker, Sunlu, Bambu) — all hold ±0.03mm or tighter. See Best PLA Filament for verified options.

Cause 5: Loose Belts (Less Common for Z-Banding)

If the X or Y belts are loose, they can cause horizontal banding patterns that look similar to Z-banding but are actually X/Y inconsistencies.

Diagnose

Pluck each belt like a guitar string. They should hold a low but distinct note. If they sound floppy, they’re loose.

Fix

Tighten the belts using the printer’s belt tensioner. Most Bambu, Creality, and Elegoo printers have integrated tensioners.

Z-Banding by Printer Type

Cartesian Bedslingers (Ender 3, Bambu A1, Neptune 4)

  • Most likely cause: Lead screw wobble or coupler issue
  • Fix: Floating coupler mod or replace lead screw

CoreXY (Bambu P1S, Creality K1C, Voron)

  • Most likely cause: Z-rail alignment or thermal fluctuation
  • Fix: Realign Z-rails or run PID tune

Resin Printers

  • Z-banding is different on resin — usually caused by Z-axis lift speed too fast or release film flexing during peel. Slow lift speed and/or replace release film.

When to Just Live With It

Mild Z-banding on hobby prints often isn’t worth chasing. If your prints look 95% perfect and have faint visible bands only under specific lighting, the marginal improvement may not be worth the disassembly time.

Reserve deep Z-banding troubleshooting for:

  • Prints you’re selling (display-quality matters)
  • Tall prints where banding is severe
  • Functional parts where layer inconsistency causes failures
